As I stare at an old family photo my father had placed on his desk, I stare into the faded faces of my newly late grandmother, my father, his sister, and four brothers. It was blurred by the erosion of time, and the next thing you know, I’m troubleshooting the scanner on the printer for the next two days.

When I finally worked out the issue with the scanner, I decided to post it on a subreddit called r/estoration, where talented individuals offer to mend the wear and tear of time on old photographs. I had perused the place before, fascinated by the miracles performed, but I needed something to submit.

On Reddit, a place I usually do not enjoy, I encountered an extraordinary talent: Aqeela from Indonesia. As a homemaker, she has developed a remarkable ability in photo restoration, a skill refined through the teachings of her husband, an expert in the field.

Among the various contributions I received, Aqeela’s stood out for its precision and beauty. Her work inspired me to print the image and acknowledgeher skill with a generous tip, recognizing the value of her meticulous restoration.

The photo in question captures a moment from 1965, portraying my grandmother at 29, surrounded by her children on the family farm after church on Mother’s Day. Despite spanning decades, this image has now been restored to such a quality that it seems as if it were taken in recent times, not during the Lyndon Johnson administration.

On top of raising six children, my grandmother also helped on the farm and worked as a postal carrier. She went on to become a grandmother and great-grandmother to dozens more. Image by Author, restored by Aqeela

In a surprising twist in life, my grandfather has remarried a former high school peer. When the couple repainted his bedroom, the original version of this photo, restored by Aqeela, was given a place of honor among the collection of family portraits by my new step-grandmother. It was a sweet gesture on her part, showing respect to my late grandmother.

Aqeela’s work is noteworthy not only for removing scratches and clarifying once-blurry faces but also for the vibrancy and life she has reintroduced to the photo. Her ability to correct the colors based on my aunt’s memories — the little girl in the picture — transformed the image into a true-to-life representation, particularly in capturing the genuine turquoise of my grandmother’s dress.

Aqeela’s second attempt, after taking this feedback into account, was nothing short of a masterpiece. This level of dedication and artistry compels me to share her gift with a broader audience. Aqeela is a talent worth seeking out for those looking to preserve their treasured memories with integrity and finesse.

This family photo will not only be enjoyed for dozens of years to come but most likely a hundred by the grandchildren and great-grandchildren who wouldn’t be here without the woman in the picture; the picture itself wouldn’t be around in such a pristine shape if it wasn’t for Aqeela, a stranger on the other side of the Earth. Everyone in the family is getting a print of this. So thank you, Aqeela. You are officially my family’s new antiquarian.

With her permission, I am leaving my readers with her contact information. For restoration inquiries, Aqeela can be contacted via her email andbuyp@gmail.com or her Reddit username, u/Sad_Occasion_196. My family and I will forever appreciate her gift for restoration, and it’s a privilege to bring her work to the attention of others who may need it.
